Save Yourself: Where and how you can fall prey to Malaria

How many times have you swatted away a mosquito while holidaying in an exotic location? Mosquitoes can be very irritating insects and could harm your health too. A single bite from the Malaria spreading mosquito can infect your bloodstream and leave you with a nasty range of symptoms. These include high fever, vomiting, nausea, headaches, muscle aches and if not treated quickly could even be fatal. To stay safe from mosquitoes, you have to stay away from malaria-prone areas.

Where does Malaria occur?

Malaria-causing mosquitoes typically breed in tropical and subtropical areas. They also depend on climatic factors such as temperature, humidity and rainfall. Some areas include:

  1. At very high altitudes
  2. During colder seasons in some areas
  3. In deserts (excluding the oases)
  4. In some countries where transmission has been interrupted through successful control/elimination programs.

In many malaria-endemic countries, malaria transmission does not occur in all parts of the country. Even within tropical and subtropical areas, the transmission may not always occur.

The highest transmission of Malaria is found in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America and parts of Oceania such as Papua New Guinea.

Symptoms of Malaria –

The symptoms of malaria typically begin to show up 8–25 days following the infection. However, the symptoms may occur later in those who have taken antimalarial medications as a preventive measure. Initial manifestations of the disease, common to all malaria species, are similar to flu-like symptoms, and can resemble other conditions such as sepsis, gastroenteritis and viral diseases. The symptoms of Malaria may include a headache, fever, shivering, joint pain, vomiting, hemolytic anaemia, jaundice, haemoglobin in the urine, retinal damage, and convulsions.

How can you fall prey to Malaria?

You might get infected with Malaria if you don’t take proper precautions to keep the mosquito bites at a minimum. You may fall prey to mosquito bites if you go on a trek or camping in an area which is a hotspot for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are often attracted to dark-coloured clothing. So to stay away from them, wear light-coloured clothing. Mosquitoes are often active at dusk and dawn, which are often cooler and less windy conditions making it favourable for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are known to breed in stagnant water. Steer clear of the stagnant water by emptying the water out of glasses, mugs, cups, buckets and spades if being left outside the house.

Preventive measures  of Malaria

Malaria can be prevented by using mosquito repellents to keep them away. The Goodknight Fabric Roll-On is instrumental in protecting kids against the mosquitoes by just applying 4 dots on their clothes. Another product that can be used are the Goodknight Patches which can be used for infants. The Goodknight Patches provide 8-hours of protection and are available in fun designs that kids would love. Both these products are made using 100% natural ingredients such as citronella and eucalyptus oils and paediatrician certified. So ensure you use these repellents regularly.
